A few years ago, you could walk into a corporate office and one thing would be missing. That one thing would be women, but as of today and throughout the past few years women have become one of the main forces to be found in professional careers. With the move to a professional workforce, the traditional household has had to make a few modifications.
Karen Noble, senior consultant of Everywhere Workplace, said that even with women entering the workforce “Women are still the main caretakers of home and children.” Other studies show women are still the main caretakers of the elders. Since women still need to be home some they need flexible hours. They need their hours to be flexible because of all the things they have to do. The hours issue is one of the major hurdles that women are facing when trying to begin their career.
Because mothers and women have started entering the workforce this has left a huge void in household chores. This puts more stress on, and gives other responsibilities to, other family members, such as preparing meals, doing laundry and other assorted household duties. These duties were traditionally done by the stay at home mom.
Tim Becker, a junior at Piedmont College, said “My idea of a traditional family is when the dad works and the mom stays at home to do things around the house, but the women have the right to do whatever they want. With women having careers, I believe this has something to do with the breakdown of traditional families, but I don’t believe it is the only thing causing the breakdown.”
Women in the work force has helped with the traditional family decline; however, with divorce rates so high and families with two same sex members on the rise along with many other contributions the traditional family does not look the same as it did ten years ago. The 21st century has brought many changes to the world. The way families are viewed is just one of the many changes. Women in professional jobs is another major change that happens to go hand in hand with family views.
